The Short Answer

Inspect chassis rust, deck condition, winch line integrity, hydraulic lines, PTO engagement, cooling system, and DEF/emissions. Always verify commercial title and clean CARFAX with no salvage / branded history.

A used tow truck can be a bargain or a $15,000 mistake. The difference is a disciplined pre-purchase inspection.

Chassis & Drivetrain

  • Frame rust — especially crossmembers behind the cab
  • Rear axle seal condition (leaks under the differential)
  • Transmission cooler routing and leaks
  • Cummins / PowerStroke / Duramax service records for DPF/DEF work
  • Cooling fan clutch engagement

Body & Deck

  • Deck cross-member rust and weld quality
  • Winch line free of frays, kinks, or 'birdcaging'
  • Hydraulic hoses for cracking near fittings
  • PTO engagement smooth, no gear grind
  • Wheel-lift extension full travel without binding
  • Toolbox latches and light bar function

Paperwork

  • Commercial title (not salvage or rebuilt)
  • Weight on title matches truck (needed for USDOT)
  • Federal ID plate and VIN present and readable
  • Prior USDOT number, if any — check FMCSA safety score

Get a Second Opinion

Spend $250–$500 on a mobile diesel mechanic pre-purchase inspection. It's the cheapest insurance in the business.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is too old?

For motor club work, 10 years max. For PPI/cash-only work, mechanicals matter more than age.

Should I buy from an auction?

Only if you can inspect on-site. Sight-unseen auction trucks are almost never a deal.

What's the top hidden cost?

DPF/DEF emissions repair. A single delete-reversal repair can hit $5,000–$8,000.
