The Short Answer

Federal USDOT is required for interstate commerce over 10,001 lbs GVWR. Most US states also require USDOT for intrastate commercial vehicles at the same threshold. Apply free at fmcsa.dot.gov.

Even if you never cross state lines, most states require you to hold a USDOT number for any commercial tow truck.

States Requiring Intrastate USDOT

  • Texas, Florida, California, New York, Georgia, Arizona, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, and 25+ others
  • Threshold usually matches federal: 10,001+ lbs GVWR
  • Some states also require MC number for for-hire towing

The Free-Application Trap

USDOT itself is free. Third-party filing sites charge $150+ for what you can file yourself in 30 minutes at fmcsa.dot.gov.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is USDOT the same as MC?

No. USDOT identifies the carrier; MC (motor carrier authority) is required for interstate for-hire tow across state lines.

Do I renew USDOT?

Biennial update required (free) even if nothing has changed. Miss it and the number is deactivated.

What about UCR?

Unified Carrier Registration fee — annual, based on fleet size. Required in most states.
