PPI Signage Requirements by State (2026 Reference)

The Short Answer
Most states require an 18"×24" tow-away sign at each entrance, minimum 4' from grade, red text on white, listing the tow company's name, phone, and per-day storage rate.
Every state has its own PPI signage statute. Bookmark this before you sign any new property contract.
Common State Rules
| State | Size | Wording |
|---|---|---|
| Florida (FS 715.07) | 18"×24" min | Must include tow company name, phone, per-day storage |
| Texas (TDLR) | 18"×24" min | TDLR-approved wording, English + Spanish in border counties |
| California (CVC 22658) | 17"×22" min | Include per-hour towing rate, 1-hour advance warning rule |
| Georgia | 24"×24" min | Must be visible from the entrance |
| Arizona (ARS 28-4838) | 17"×22" min | Include tow rate and phone |
The 1-Hour Rule
Several states (CA, MI, others) require a vehicle be parked for at least 1 hour before non-authorized tow, unless signage explicitly waives it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who pays for the signs?
Standard practice is the tow company installs and maintains at their cost, in exchange for exclusive PPI rights.
What if the sign is knocked down?
Any tow made while the sign is down can be voided. Photograph signs monthly.
Do signs expire?
Not by statute, but faded/damaged signs fail inspection. Replace every 2–3 years.
